Let’s get to work

It’s been almost a week since the U.S. election, and like many Americans, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to get more involved and contribute to the issues that matter most to me.

This blog is based on a single premise: that eating whatever you want, whenever you want, will help you rise above food issues. But this is a luxury that not everyone has.

Food insecurity is something that I feel passionately about…so passionately that I hardly know where to start writing about it. But not knowing what to say is no excuse to say nothing.

According to the USDA, more than 15 million Americans experienced food insecurity last year. This is defined as lacking access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.

I’ve been doing a lot of research on how to support this cause with my money and my time, and thought I’d share my findings below:

  • Feeding America: A nationwide network of American food banks with 4 out of 4 stars on Charity Navigator. One of the largest charities in the US. You can donate here.
  • Cooking Matters/No Kid Hungry: An American organization that teaches individuals in the community how to shop for nutritious, low-cost foods and prepare delicious meals. Important to note that the charity is not well-rated for its financial management (though it scores a 4 of 4 for accountability and transparency) so this is not where I will be donating money, but you can make a difference in your community as a volunteer. Learn more about volunteering here.
  • Feedback Global: Did you know that a third of the planet’s food is wasted? This UK-based international organization is committed to reducing food waste around the world. Learn more and donate here.

Finally, an excellent resource for Americans looking for hunger-centered volunteer opportunities in your area: Visit actioncenter.nokidhungry.org and plug in your zip code to learn more about local organizations and how you can get involved.
